The white Viognier grape is definitely the jewel in the crown of France’s northern Rhone region. The Domaine de Monteillet Les Grandes Chaillees hails from the tiny, world-renowned Condrieu appellation and delivers a wine which is elegant and delicately perfumed but fresh and minerally with layers of complexity. The 2018 vintage is still crammed with an amazing array of primary fruit flavours like mango, honeydew melon and peach and has a long and satisfying finish. If you’ve got the patience, this wine will develop wonderfully honeyed secondary flavours over the next decade. This is definitely one to consider for a special Christmas treat and it would pair brilliantly with grilled prawns or top-notch macaroni cheese.
